United States Statistics (Annual Numbers):


  • 240,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year (about 1,000 per working day)

  • 40,000 women will die of metastatic breast cancer each year (about 108 per day)

  • 60,000 women will be diagnosed with DCIS each year

  • Another 40,000 women per year will be told they have metastatic breast cancer and that it is not curable


Trends:  Incidence of Breast Cancer (measured per 100,000 per year):

  • 1975 (when good data started being collected) – 105 women per 100,000

  • 1999 (peak) – 141 women per 100,000

  • Since 2002 – about 126.5 women per 100,000


Death Rate of Breast Cancer: (measured per 100,000 per year):

  • 1975 - 31.5 deaths per 100,000

  • 1989 – 33.2 deaths per year (highest year)

  • 2011 – 21.5 deaths per year (most credit the drop to a combination of better drugs -chemo, Herceptin, Tamoxifen -  and early detection, especially mammography)
